Haunted Halloween Ham Bread {It's Not Too Late!}

October 28, 2013

Need a great appetizer to bring over to your neighbor's on Halloween night? It's not too late to pull together this fabulously tasty haunted Halloween ham bread recipe. It's loved by both parents and kids alike, and it's sure to wow them in both appearance and taste!

My husband made this haunted Halloween ham bread this past weekend for a Halloween party and, as always, it got plenty of oohs and aaahs!  He mastered the recipe while working in a bakery on the Jersey shore as a kid.  Not surprisingly, he said it always "sold out."  {Spookiness, however, is original.}

HAUNTED HALLOWEEN HAM BREAD RECIPE

INGREDIENTS
1 to 1.5 lb. dough ball  (from freezer, bread machine or pizza shop)
1/2-3/4 lb. thinly sliced polish ham
1/2 lb. thinly sliced american cheese
1/4 - 1/2 lb. each thinly sliced Genoa and hard salami
1/4 lb. cheddar slices (or shredded cheddar)
Olive Oil
Italian seasoning
[Optional - pepperoni slices, Sirachi sauce, jalapeno peppers for spooky factor]

Allow dough to rise as if making bread. On floured surface, roll out to approximately 18" by 12".

Place meats and cheese in the middle, leaving enough dough free of toppings so you can fold in the ends and sides to seal shut.

Cover the middle well - think putting pepperoni all over a pizza, but not the crust.

All ingredients should be thinly sliced, so sharp edges don't pierce the dough.

Fold sides in, pinch together, using wet fingertips if needed to seal the seam shut. Fold ends up and over. Pinch seams tight.

Coat lightly with olive oil, flip over so seams are down on your jelly roll pan, coat the top with olive oil.

Sprinkle Italian seasonings or oregano lightly on top, add jalapenos (eyes, mouth) or Sirachi sauce (stitches, lips) to decorate. Lightly cut surface in a few places to allow air to escape when baking.  Let finished product rest for 30 minutes (if you have the time) - or not - then place in 425 degree oven until gold brown, crispy and bubbling.

Let cool 5-10 minutes, cut crossways into slices and enjoy. NOTE: This thing feeds a ton of people, it's huge!

Fall Series Take 2: Thankgiving Chalkboard Ideas

October 22, 2013

I'm continuing my blast from the past fall/Halloween decor series with a look at three of my fall chalkboard ideas from last year.  I'm still pretty proud of them and will use them again this year!

Since my last post was about Thanksgiving printables I wanted to keep the holiday momentum going with a few words about giving thanks and chalkboards.

As for the first topic, I have so much to be thankful for.  I try to make it a point of saying thank you every day, but sometimes it gets hard.  Life can be difficult and messy.  We do the best we can.  But around this time of year the whole "attitude of gratitude" frame of mind is all around us.  And that's not such a bad thing.  It reminds us to slow down and take the time to actually count our blessings.  When was the last time you did that?

As for the second topic, you all know how much I love me some chalkboards!  And after seeing this beauty of a Thanksgiving chalkboard made by Vanessa over at Crafts Unleashed I just had to share it with you {and of course try to copy it}.

Vanessa's is a calendar of sorts, with thirty lines, one for each day of the month of November.  What a nice reminder to give daily thanks.

I originally tried to make stencils of her beautifully scripted letters but gave up after a bit of a struggle and decided to just wing it.  I've never been one for drawing freehand but I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out.

You might recognize the chalkboard as one that I made.  I also used it recently to add to my fall decor.

You can get my plexiglass chalkboard tutorial here.

One other Thanksgiving chalkboard idea I have to share is from Better Homes and Gardens.

You can find their video about it here.

Just so happens I already had the perfect homemade chalkboard for this Thanksgiving centerpiece.  The ironstone pitcher was a Goodwill steal.  I love it!

You can use this as a real conversation starter.  I think it'd be cute to scatter some "I'm Thankful" card printables {you can get them here} around the table.  Your guests and family could then fill them out and share their thanks just as you all sit down for that Thanksgiving meal.  I always love hearing what my kids are thankful for.

I thought this was kind of cool with the sun gleaming in behind the flowers which, by the way, were a gift from Mr.CBD.

So what are you thankful for?

I hope you've enjoyed my chalkboards!

And I 'd really love to hear how you decorate your chalkboards this time of year.

xoxo

Pink Pumpkins and Vintage Tool Caddy {Fall Decor}

October 17, 2013

I spent last weekend in Michigan and got to do some s-h-o-p-p-i-n-g!  We went to the quaint and lovely town of South Haven again and I was lucky enough to pick up an early Christmas present from Mr. CBD.  I've always wanted this, and it couldn't be a more perfect time of year for it.

It's a vintage tool caddy, which we all know is every farmhouse-loving-girl's dream!  I was excited to be able to bring it home, place in on our custom built farmhouse table, and fill it with pumpkins and gourds of all shapes, colors and sizes.

It says "From Buffalo Bolt Co." on the side of the caddy.  I've never seen that before, but I think it adds quite a bit of vintage charm to the piece.  Oh, and did I mention that it's HUGE?  It's 30 inches long.  I had so much fun setting it up with the glorious and colorful seasonal harvest.  Especially the pink and white pumpkins!

If you follow me on Instagram you've already seen the amazing pumpkins I came across at a produce market in Sawyer, MI.  The shots I got were so good I think I'll post them here later, along with some better shots of the new tool caddy.  But for right now I'm one happy girl.

Thanks to Mr. CBD for the awesome gift.  And thanks to our Creator for providing all the "props" this fall season.

Happy Fall, y'all!

xoxo

Join Me For Some DIY Rustic Antler Decor on Hometalk

October 11, 2013

You all know that I L-O-V-E antler décor, so I was really happy when the folks at Hometalk asked me to put together a clipboard of their finest antler décor tips and tricks.  For some reason I feel like this is the perfect time of year to get all "antler-y."  How about you?

For starters, check out this pallet antler wall art from Megan Brooke.  I love how the frame really sets off the antlers.

And I'm totally crushing on the "dipped" look of these gold painted antlers by The Blissful Bee.

You all know I'd be remiss (he-he) if I didn't mention my own DIY white painted and mounted antlers.

There's many more DIY rustic antler décor ideas over on Hometalk, including ideas for the upcoming Christmas holidays.

So be sure to check them all out here!

Have a great weekend, friends!

Fall Vignette

October 7, 2013

Not much going on here these days since I haven't really been decorating for the season.  It's  unusual for me, but home schooling is taking up most of my time right now.  I did want to share a little vignette with you, though, and (believe it or not) some more of those amazing hydrangeas that just keep on giving.

I just liked the light streaming in here so I took a picture.  This is our family room, and it's usually impossible to get a good picture due to inadequate lighting.  So I jump at the chance to take a picture in here anytime I can.

I went outside today and checked on the hydrangea bushes, more as an afterthought than anything else, since by my recollection they should be pretty much done blooming by now.  But no.

I cut a couple bright pink ones and threw them in one of my vintage blue Mason jars.  There are still a few new blooms out there that I'll be keeping an eye on.  And of course I had to cut the drying ones, too.

I've been so blessed with blooms this year, it practically makes me giddy every time I discover more despite the lateness of the season.  I'm not complaining, of course.

And here is a beautiful fall bouquet courtesy of Mr. CBD, "just because."  He knows that fall is my favorite time of year.  Thanks, babe!

Well, I've got a few full days of homeschooling ahead of me and then a 4-day Fall Break weekend coming up.  Hoping to see some pretty leaves in Michigan.  If I capture any I'll be sure to post them on Facebook and Instagram.  Do you follow?  I'd love it if you would!  See sidebar for details.

Have a great week, friends!

Fall and Halloween Series Take 1: Rubber Rats Anyone?

October 1, 2013

Okay, I'll admit it:  I have not decorated for Fall or Halloween as of yet.  As much as I'm not happy about it, life has been too complicated lately to do the things I usually do this time of year.  So, I'm gonna have to dig deep and share with you a few favorites from years past.

Today I'm sharing some of my cheap and easy Dollar Tree rubber rat Halloween decor from last year {2012}.

Enjoy!

I promised I'd show you something I did for Halloween with my friendly {creepy, spooky} rat silhouettes.  I have to say, though, that those innocent silhouettes made me think outside the box and give in to those squeaky, rubber rats from Dollar Tree. Can you say Ben?  I was so enamored with the rat silhouettes that I posted about here, I had to take it one step further and add a 3-D element to the creepiness.

Wouldn't you just love to stumble across this one in the dead of night?

Chickadee number 2 helped me decide where to put them all, and she even drew some rat hole doors for effect.

I especially love this one on the clock in the foyer.

I originally got this idea from Martha Stewart's Halloween Book, "The Best of Martha Stewart Halloween Handbook."

Martha Stewart Crafts Mice Silhouettes

You can buy her silhouettes on line here, or you can go to her website here and get the templates to print and cut these critters out for yourself.  Actually, you'll be able to print out ALL her templates from birds, to mice to witches to owls.  And speaking of witches and owls....

This owl is another one of my Dollar Tree silhouettes.  Doesn't it look absolutely marvelous on my vintage gold leaf mirror?  I also have a bunch of bird silhouettes from last year.  Who knows where they're going to go?

I've always loved this white pumpkin with the witch's silhouette painted on it.  This year I placed it on a chippy, shabby thrift store candlestick and added some plastic spiders on top for effect.

And last but not least, I couldn't help myself and just had to place one of my teeny, tiny mice under glass.  I mean, what are cloches for, anyway?

Bon appetit?

Mwaaahhhhhhhhh.

What do YOU have planned for Halloween decor?

I'll be sharing more Halloween and Fall decorating ideas from years past over the next few weeks. Hope you're inspired!

Thanks for stopping by!

xoxo
