A Pinteresting Salted Caramel Apple Pie Recipe

September 29, 2014

Last year around this time I shared my favorite tried and true apple pie recipe. It's been a favorite in my house for years. And years. So this fall I thought I'd mix it up a bit and (gasp) make a different (but just as delicious) apple pie. Well, pies. Individual caramel apple pies, that is.

This recipe can be found on my Fun Food Pinterest Board, along with all the other recipes that I baked with my kids over this past summer. It's a new take on an old classic ~ individual pies versus one big pie. I was a bit hesitant to try it. I mean, why mess with with a good thing? But I'm glad I did.

Here is an individual pie before I added the top layer of dough.
Can't you just smell the cinnamon?

Here it is with the top crust, after I fluted the edges with a fork.

And here they are in all their salted caramel apple glory.

Flaky crust, warm caramel and softened apples with cinnamon.
You couldn't ask for a better combination on a cool, crisp, fall day.

You can find the recipe at Sugar Apron, a food blog I came across
while perusing Pinterest one day.

I have to say that I'm pretty proud of myself for having made these, especially since I actually made the dough from scratch. For someone who would rather use store bought Pillsbury pie crust rounds, that's quite an accomplishment. But if dough from scratch is not for you, I am sure you can substitute premade dough and they will turn out just fine.

Do you have a favorite apple pie recipe?

Well, that's it until next time, friends!

Ballard Hemp Dog Toy Storage Knock-Off

September 22, 2014

Yes, we got a dog.
A puppy in fact.
We're a family that is happier
with
a dog than without one.
And we all know that
along with dogs comes
stuff.
Here's just a sampling of what's
lying around our floor as I type this.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Enter Ballard Designs

I knew the first time I saw this that it was something I could absolutely make myself.
I had already purchased some awesome burlap buckets
from Antique Farmhouse a while back and I knew they'd be perfect for this.

Here are mine, sans stencil.

There were actually four of them,
all for $28.00.
Here's what I did to the largest bucket.

I had a stencil that was somewhat similar to the pattern on the Ballard bucket, so I taped the stencil onto the bucket and then painted it on. Then I played around with different fonts to see which one I liked the best. While the Ballard version has a really basic font, I wanted something a little more sophisticated that would go better with my French-ified decorating style.

(I did not use this font.)

You have to be sure that the words are the right size
in proportion to the space,
so I usually tape a sample of it onto
the item I'm stenciling.

It took me FOREVER to find a font
that I liked for this project.
I don't know about you,
but I always get overwhelmed by
the many font options out there.
I do like the one I eventually chose, though.

The font I chose is called Birds of Paradise.
You can download it here.

I was pretty happy with how it turned out.
Ballard Designs' version cost $55.

Mine cost $7 for the bucket plus a small amount
of acrylic paint I already had on hand.
The adorable little container on the left
is from the Dollar Store and is filled with,
what else, treats!

If you're not interested in making your own,
but don't want to pay Ballard's prices,
I actually found another website called
Harry Barker that sells the exact same
dog toy storage bin for $38.

I picked up this "Boulangerie" or French bakery tin
for a song at the Kane County Flea Market
in St. Charles, IL.
I knew it would make the perfect dog food bin!

So here's my version in all her glory.

What do you think?

I think burlap is one of the easiest materials to paint.
 Maybe you remember my
 painted burlap farmhouse table runner?
I love how that turned out!

Have you ever painted burlap?
If you did, I'd love to know how it turned out!

Transform Your Vintage Flour Sack Into A No-Sew Pillow Cover

September 11, 2014

Continrntal Baking Company Wheat Flour Sack

I love pillows. I love grain sacks and flour sacks.Match made in heaven, right? Perhaps you remember when I made a faux grainsack pillow with a Target dish towel a few years ago. I still love it and use it every day on the family room couch. But there's always room for one more grain or flour sack pillow, now isn't there?

Easy Peasy Homemade Sun Tea

September 7, 2014

vintage milk bottles homemade iced tea

Okay, I know all of blogland has gone bee-wees for fall, but let's be honest. In some parts of the country, no matter what the calendar says, it's still going to FEEL like summer. If this sounds even vaguely familiar to you, then read on.

Hanging on to Summer: Southern Living's One Step Raspberry Beer Cocktail

September 4, 2014

Even though fall is my favorite season, hands down, I do love summer, too. And as much as I can't wait to start wearing comfy leggings with boots and warm, cozy sweaters, I'm a realist. I know that here in the Midwest we're going to experience an Indian summer for at least another month, if not longer. So why fight it?

That's why I wanted to share with you this quintessentially summer beverage called a Raspberry Beer Cocktail.

It's not too late to make a pitcher and enjoy!

I've never been one to drink hard liquor, or even wine. But I do love me some beer. As long as it's light beer, that is. I'd never mixed beer with anything before so I was intrigued by this recipe. It just sounded like it would be refreshing on a hot summer day. I think Mr. CBD thought I was a bit nuts, but he went along with me anyway.

Okay, don't these raspberries look delicious?

Here's the recipe from Southern Living:

Raspberry Beer Cocktail

Ingredients:

3/4 c. frozen raspberries*
3 1/2 (12 oz.) bottles beer, chilled
1 (12 oz.) can frozen strawberry lemonade
1/2 cup vodka
Garnish (optional): lemon and lime slices

Preparations:

1. Stir together first four ingredients. Serve over ice.
Garnish if desired.

*Fresh raspberries may be substituted.

I just mixed it all up and poured it into two vintage blue Ball Mason jars.

Then I threw in some extra frozen raspberries for good measure. Yum.

Next up will be my secret recipe for home brewed sun tea.

Well I hope you're enjoying those last warm and (hopefully) lazy days of Indian summer wherever you are. I know I'll be enjoying them with our kids and the new puppy!

Alert: Gratuitous puppy picture ahead.

I hope that makes you smile!
