Friday Finds #2: Vintge Edition Road Rescue

October 31, 2014

I know I just posted a Friday Find, but I have another
one to share and well, it IS Friday, so here goes.

Just take a look at this beauty.

Chickadee number one had expressed an interest
in rearranging her room (insert surprise here - not),
which included the need to find a small table
to replace her rather large desk.

We had just seen some cute small tables while
we were out doing our Sunday errands.
Problem was, none were in our price range.

Enter road rescue.

Sure, a drawer appeared to be missing, but why let that stop us?

She spied it sitting at the end of our neighbor's driveway
as we were heading home, and she yelled out for me
to stop the car.

Gotta love it, I've trained them well.

The trunk was filled with groceries so we couldn't stash it there,
and it didn't fit in the back seat either.
So she CARRIED it herself from their house to ours.
It was kind of a haul but she clearly wanted this table!

You can see it has a glass top and is kidney-shaped.
I googled "kidney shaped table" and came up with
images of this same table on Etsy, asking price

$150 and $175.

I believe it's from the 1950's or 1960's
and was used as a vanity table.

I'm not really sure what the "arms" are for, got any ideas?

I'm thinking that we can possibly fill the empty drawer spot
with a basket of some sort, or if we're really lucky we
just might find a replacement drawer.

The glass top is sweet because it protects the wood but it also
slides off easily if need be. I read that sometimes a fabric skirt
was added all around it. I love the idea but I'm not sure how
keen chickadee number one would be about it.

Will I be painting it?

Heck, yes.

My daughter has asked that I paint it white.

So that's the plan for now.

I can't wait to get started.

What color would you paint it?

Stain it?

Do tell.

Here's to a Happy Halloween
and a great weekend!

Friday Finds Vintage Edition

October 26, 2014

I love vintage.
Old.
Worn out.
Loved.
Cherished.
Chippy.
Shabby.

Anyone who has followed me for any length of time knows that.
But I feel like I've managed to get away from the "vintage"
aspect of this blog somewhat, and I want to get back to it.

One way of doing that is to share with you my

thrift store

flea market

barn sale

estate sale

and any-other-sale

F.I.N.D.S.

I'm going to try to make it a Friday thing,
hence my post name "Friday Finds."

And don't worry.
I do realize that it's actually Sunday.
But I didn't want to wait until next Friday
to share this with you!

Today I'm sharing a champagne bucket and trophy/loving cup
that I picked up at an estate sale last weekend.

And a perfectly chippy,
shabby, old ladder.

Aren't these leaves gorgeous?
Courtesy of my front yard!

I'm in love with the look of this baby pumpkin inside the silver cup.

So what would you do with this awesome ladder?
Should I paint it or leave it as is?
I've gone back and forth on the question myself.
Whether I paint it or not I'm sure it will eventually
end up as another one of my many home décor projects.

SO:

To paint or not to paint?

What would you do?

And what would you use the ladder for?

You can always stop by my "Ladders" Pinterest Board for inspiration!

Vintage Ammunition Box Turned Furniture Find

October 24, 2014

When I recently scored this vintage ammunition box
I immediately knew what I wanted to do with it:

Add legs and make a table.

I mean, how tough could that be?  I also thought
that casters would be cool so that it could be
moved around the house more easily.
I mean, this thing is huge.

Mr. CBD found it on a Saturday afternoon shopping venture
and he texted me this picture of it to see if I wanted
him to bring it home.

Heck yeah!

Initially I saw it as a coffee table, but now
I'm leaning toward more of a sofa table
that can be used either as a sofa table
or maybe a foyer table underneath our stairs.

Only problem is, I'm a real novice when it comes to:

1. Furniture making in general

2. Staining wood

3. Sealing anything

Initially I had it in our family room while I was considering
what to do with it. But the very first night my husband
seemed to have some kind of allergic reaction to it.
The only thing we could figure was that the box
is still coated and/or filled with whatever ammo
boxes are coated and/or filled with.

Ammo dust?

Powder?

It definitely needs a good hosing down.

But either way, it also smells pretty musty.

So I ask you:

1. What do YOU think I should make out of it?

2. What's the best stain to use on something like this?

3. What kind of sealant would you recommend,

and do you think it would help get rid of the smell?

4. What should I use to make the legs?

I can't wait to hear what you have to say about it!

On another note, what do you have planned
for this weekend? We'll be going to an annual
family-friendly Halloween party.

Last year Mr. CBD made some ghoulishly
good food for it. The jury's still out on what
he'll be making for this year's party but there
have already been requests that he recreate
his masterpiece from last year!

Right now I'm working on the kids' costumes.
Hopefully I can share a bit of that with you later.

Free and Easy Halloween Chalkboard Printables For Framing

October 19, 2014

Blogland is full of chalkboard art printables
for every occasion and thensome.
Sometimes it's hard for me to pick my favorites.
But this Halloween I picked two and ran with it
since I had a thrift store frame
I was just itching to fill.

Here's the frame "before."
You can see I had just started applying
painter's tape to the glass.
It had been sitting in the garage
for at least a year so I figured
it was time to bite the bullet
and begin the transformation.

And here it is "after."

Isn't she pretty?

I really wanted to fill it with photos, but for
something so big (it holds two  8 x 10 pics) I wanted to make
sure they were really good pics.  For now, I decided
to fill it with seasonal graphics. And what better graphics
to display this month than some Halloween printables?

My friend, Carol, over at The Answer is Chocolate, makes
awesome printables (among other things). This one
really cracked me up. Anyone remember
The (original) Wizard of Oz?
I do, and I also remember that I loved it as a kid.
So this Halloween printable really spoke to me.

Another fabulous printable I stumbled upon
reflects more of a ghoulish character.

I got it from The 36th Avenue. Don't you just love it?
I think the "Midnight Witches Soiree"
sounds grand, don't you think?

My family and I will be attending
our own "Halloween Soiree"
next weekend. I can't wait!
Are you going to any Halloween parties
or do you prefer to hang out at home
and hand out candy to the kiddos?

These graphics really make for some awesome
Halloween art, don't you think?

I added the pumpkin for a pop of color into this mainly black and white vignette.
The trophy/loving cup was a recent estate sale find and I knew
as soon as I bought it that I wanted to put a pumpkin in it.

I simply added an ironstone pitcher filled with some
ghoulish Dollar Store black flowers
(that come with their own built-in spiders, thank you)
and a raven statue that I love to take out and
display this time of year.

Next up: Thanksgiving wall art printables!

I might even design my own this time.

So stay tuned!

Natural Fall Decor, Vintage Style

October 16, 2014

I never get tired of using my vintage tool caddy for decorating our farmhouse table. From season to season and from holiday to holiday it has never let me down.

Here it is last year around this time. I filled it with heirloom pumpkins and traditional fall gourds.

This year I thought I'd switch things up a bit and add some apples, a huge favorite in my house this time of year.

I also used some small pumpkins, moss balls and other natural filler that I've used throughout the year and it ended up looking just the way I like it. Quintessential fall.

From this angle you can see my most recent DIY "EAT" sign I'll be sharing with you later.

In addition to fall, this old toolbox has served as a Christmas centerpiece . . . . .

as well as a Spring centerpiece filled with moss "rocks," moss balls and other natural filler elements.

Right now I'm happy to see it on our table filled with the colors of fall. Who knows what you'll find in it once Christmas rolls around again?

Well that's it for today, friends!
